Tyre killers use raised spikes to stop vehicles attempting to cross in the prohibited direction. They can reinforce exits, checkpoints and controlled lanes but require prominent warnings, speed control and strict operating procedures. They should never be treated as an ordinary traffic-calming device.
Automatic versions can lower for authorised movement and integrate with access readers or guard controls. Mechanical versions are useful where a one-way restriction must remain active without power.
